WRITING, EDITING, RESEARCH

 

• Write catalog and jacket copy for new releases by scholarly and regional trade divisions, targeting wholesale buyers and academic and general readers. Subjects matter examples are U.S. Civil War, Latin American Studies, African-American Studies, Architecture and Fine Arts, guidebooks to southern marine habitats and birding.

Southern Governors Association (SGA)

• Primary field researcher on two projects. (1) Assembly of organization's first comprehensive institutional archive covering founding in 1934 to present day for the Southern Historical Collection at UNC. (2) Drafting a timeline of the SGA's political history for the 75th anniversary exhibit.
• Examined governors' files in South Carolina to identified original documents and artifacts suitable for the exhibit and archive. Collected news articles, Op-Eds, editorials, cartoons, and photos from every year since 1934 utilizing microfilm and digital databases.
• Wrote the education section for the organization's NEH grant proposal and compiled a timeline focusing on accomplishments and conflicts relating to civil rights, economic development, education, trade, and nuclear energy.

Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL)

• Conducted field research on the guerrilla war and drug trafficking in residence at institute dedicated to producing policy-relevant academic research on economics, violence, and conflict.
• Obtained municipal-level time-series datasets on violence and historical maps of guerrilla and paramilitary presence from 1950 to the present.
• Conducted elite Interviews to reconstruct historical geography of drug production, seaward and overland transshipment zones of raw and processed materials, migration patterns, rural economic development, private land purchases, armed group presence, strategic corridors, and wartime assets related to the intensification of conflict since the boom of the Colombian cocaine trade in the mid-1970s.
  

• Conducted pre-dissertation field research on violence in Colombia.
• Established contacts in human rights NGOs, academia, government ministries, U.S. Embassy, and Colombian Vice President's office.
  
• Acquired data on drug production, violence, gangs, guerrillas, and other armed groups, and the rural economy of Colombia.

• Wrote feature articles for Cardinals’ official magazine (standing offer to contribute continues to present day). Highlights include a cover story on shortstop Edgar Renteria, a comparison of baseball cultures in Boston and St. Louis, and credits for both photos and text of an article on Cardinals experiences in the Dominican Republic.

• Published and presented research covering online functionality of credit card products; collected data using over 100 active accounts. One popular report examined online and offline legal disclosures for 15 credit card products and another compared bilingual/Spanish content and tools.

• Let’s Go Publications. Scholarly Essay Writer, Proofreader.Wrote region-specific articles listed below under Publications. Proofread guidebooks.
• Robert Reich for Massachusetts Governor. Policy Researcher. Submitted memos to the Political Director providing background on issues and interest groups. Notable "Quinn Bill" paper discussed police pay-for-education incentive law about which disparate interests agreed led to wasteful practices, but which proved untouchable for campaigning officials.

• Coordinated migration and production of content for the re-launch of Cardinals' official website as part of the new MLB.com portal. Supervised Site Assistant Editor coordinated preparations with internal departments and NYC-based MLB.com headquarters staff. Published content utilizing Sun Microsystems Java Enterprise content management system (CMS) customized for MLB. Edited photos in Photoshop, wrote, edited, and transferred content, and archived pages according to detailed specifications.
• After launch MLBAM redefined duties of onsite staff. One individual was reassigned as Site Reporter and the other as Site Manager. As Site Reporter, I delivered a game preview, notebook column, game story, sidebar, and a collection and transcription of opposing team quotes.
• Personal highlights and accomplishments. Spring reports on Rick Akiel's comeback praised by radio journalists as providing superior critical analysis compared with independent print coverage. In-depth amateur draft coverage explained organization's rapidly evolving draft strategies as a compromise of interests among scouting and player development staff, general management, ownership, and field management. Met the high-pressure challenge of working inside the front office on the team's official website while responding to editorial demands that increasingly demanded breaking news against the team's wishes and critically analyzing Cardinals management and players.

Dominican Correspondent, Winter 1998 - 1999

• Assigned to improve and expand guidebook coverage following release of the first edition. Assessed quality of existing content by comparing it with direct competitors (Lonely Planet, Rough Guides); also reviewed niche outdoors guides (e.g., Sierra Club) to make more reclusive destinations accessible to shoestring travelers and gain competitive advantage. Traversed Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland by car over three months.

Editor, Let's Go: Spain & Portugal Including Morocco, 1997

• Oversaw revision and production of all content, including destination information, maps, and index, of the 1998 edition of best-selling budget travel guide to the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. Hired and supervised two editors and seven field researcher-writers. Responsible for meeting regular deadlines and hard book deadlines.

• Revised, updated, wrote, and re-wrote sections of the guidebook covering the Mediterranean coast of Spain and Balaeric Islands.
